When I started sewing almost a year ago, I was excited by the idea of making clothes that fit me well. I assumed that if I made my own clothes, they would naturally fit my body. After all, they were handmade… right?
I quickly learned it isn't that simple. Sewing patterns are drafted to a set of measurements and proportions, and choosing your size is just a starting point — it doesn't guarantee every part of the garment will sit where you want it to.
I'm 4'11", so fit has been one of the most frustrating parts of my sewing journey. But when I asked other sewists about this recently, I realized it's not really a height problem — it's a proportion problem, and it shows up at every height. People 5'2", 5'8", even 6 feet tall told me the same story: a pattern fits their "size" on paper, and still doesn't fit their actual body. One person put it perfectly — petite is a proportion, not a height. That reframed the whole thing for me.
You probably know the feeling regardless: you find a pattern you love, choose the fabric, gather your notions, print and cut, and spend hours bringing it to life. You imagine how it'll look. Then comes the moment of truth — you try it on, and it isn't bad, exactly, it just doesn't look the way you pictured on your actual body.
I've had that happen more times than I'd like to admit. I have a few handmade pieces I wear all the time, and quite a few more sitting unworn in my wardrobe. At times I wondered if sewing was even the right hobby for me.
Instead of giving up, I've decided to actually learn about fit — properly, not just by guessing — and figure out how to make garments work for my body. This blog is where I'll document that process: the mistakes, the wins, the frustrations, and what I actually learn along the way.
I'm not a fitting expert. I'm still learning, and I'll be sharing the journey from my own extra-petite perspective. But if you've ever had a pattern fit your size and still not fit you — whether you're petite, tall, or somewhere in between — I'd love to hear what went wrong and how you fixed it.
Next up, I'm going to try drafting my first fitted block from scratch, since nearly every experienced sewist I've talked to says that's what finally solved this for them. I'll document whether it actually works for a beginner like me.
